The moniker The Young Republicans obviously comes with some preconceived notions, but this group of musicians is anything but what the name implies. Although the members of the group are young in age they are well beyond their years in the development of their sound. With the unique vocal style of 21-year-old Johnny Schulte, backed by a group of musicians influenced by The Beatles, Ryan Adams, and Death Cab for Cutie, they are well on their way to winning the vote of music listener’s ears. What started as an experimental project between cousins Johnny Schulte and Scott Baumil, with the help of close friend Chris Shepp in the spring of 2004, quickly developed into much more than just a creative output. With the addition of Ian Lampkin and Josh Martin the project began treading closer to the initial vision that the group set out to accomplish. Within the first 3 months of their musical union, they created their first recorded work. Striving to create something “special,” The Young Republicans first EP, Canvas, is a clear representation of what to expect from the group in the future. Incorporating a gamut of musical instruments, samples, and vocal harmonies, showcased on “High From Underground” and “Magnolias”, mixed with other tracks that represent the band’s live incarnation, including “Oxygen,” the EP takes the listener on a musical journey that defines The Young Republicans sound. Looking forward and constantly trying to develop and prefect their sound, the band is currently hard at work preparing new material for recordings to be released in the early months of 2005.
